Lehigh Valley ISA Section awards Nicholas A. Stangil Memorial Scholarships to four local students

The Lehigh Valley Section has awarded 4 $500 Nicholas A. Stangil Memorial Scholarship to students at Northampton County Community College (NCC) and Lehigh Career and Technical Institute (LCTI).  These scholarships were awarded to candidates based on the following merits:

·  Demonstrated interest in the field of Industrial Automation and Controls, Cybersecurity of Automation System, PLC Software development; or Industrial Automation Electrical Design.

·  Relevant coursework related to industrial/manufacturing automation, Robotics, Programmable Logic Controller programming

·   An internship/co-op experience related to Automation and Controls

The students that received the awards were:

April Technical Talk : Hazardous Area Electrical Protection

Our April meeting will be presented by on April 12th from 5-7PM at the Air Products Trexlertown Campus.

Charlie Ackerman (Journeyman Electrician and former Air Products trainer ) and Shane Filer (Vice President of Sales for Neal Systems Inc (NSI) will present on the following topics: 

Hazardous Area Electrical Protection – Understanding the Pros and Cons of Intrinsic Safety, Explosion Proof, Purging / Pressurizing, and Non-Incendive Methodologies.

A light dinner will be served. All non Air Products employees must preregister in order to gain access to the Air Products site. The meeting will be held in Conference room A31G1 which is inside the Adm 3 lobby. Please register under the “Events” tab on this site.

Meeting Abstract:

Many industrial plants have areas that are classified “hazardous areas” due to explosive levels of gases, dusts and fibers. The engineers and maintenance teams that must deploy electrical panels, instrumentation and process hardware in those areas often struggle with understanding rules and application of the various protection methods that are available – explosion proof, purging / pressurizing, intrinsic safety, and non-incendive.

Topics to include:

The wrong question being asked that resulted in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger

  • The momentum of errors / failures that caused the 2005 explosion of the BP Texas City refinery
  • A review of hazardous area definitions for Divisions and Zones
  • Pros and cons with utilizing / applying each method

Bio – Charlie Ackerman

  • Retired from Air Products after 30+ years
    • Electrical control and analytical instrumentation panel design, installation and maintenance
    • Consulting as an instructional designer, subject matter expert for technical courses and stand up instructor
    • Supervisor of Instrumentation and Electrical department within R&D, specializing in hazardous area electrical installations and OSHA 1910.331-335 Electrical Safety qualified individual instruction and certification
    • Licensed electrical contractor 40+ years
    • Former adjunct professor Northampton Community College
      • Taught basic Process Control Instrumentation and ISA 5.1 Symbology and MS Visio documentation courses
      • Developed numerous instrumentation courses for the college
      • ISA International Level:
        • Senior Life Member
        • Former ISA Executive Board member
        • District 2 Vice President
        • Image and Membership Chair
        • Student Bowl Chair
        • Former member of ISA SP-84
        • Former ISA Certified Control System Technician (CCST) test preparation instructor

Bio – Shane Filer

  • ISA Member for 15 years (Past President of Lehigh Valley ISA)
  • 20+ years of experience with electrical panel, gas detection system, and process instrumentation design and implementation in hazardous areas utilizing explosion proof, intrinsic safety, purging and non-incendive methods
  • Process industrial instrumentation experience from companies Leeds and Northrup (L&N), Honeywell, and NSI
  • Technical Author and Presenter from 20+ industry magazines and conferences
  • Electrical Engineering degree from Grove City College


What are my parking options at the event?

All attendees from outside Air Products should enter the campus from the main entrance Gate 2 on Hamilton Blvd across from Wendys. Please park in Lot K (It is the first lot on the right after you enter Gate 2). The meeting room is on the right inside the Adm 3 main lobby.

Lehigh Valley ISA Section Sponsor’s Tabletop Night : March 15 in Trexlertown PA

Please join us for our bi-annual Lehigh Valley ISA tabletop show followed by a technical talk.

Come see the Lehigh Valley ISA section sponsors at the Air Products Main Auditorium in Trexlertown, PA. Typical sponsors that have attended are listed on our section website

The table top show will start at 3 PM until 6PM and will be followed by the speaker presentation starting at 5:30PM to 7PM. Please include your company name, email address and phone number in your registration. This show will include a dinner sponsored by the Lehigh Valley ISA section.

All Guests and Vendor’s that do not have an Air Products Badge will need to be pre-registered in order to enter the Air Products Campus.

Please enter Air Products through the Main Gate on Hamilton Blvd. Parking is available in the lot at the first right once you enter the campus. The show will be held in the Main Auditorium in the lower level of the Adm 3 building.

Registration is free for Guests. Vendors can sponsor a table for $150.

Introducing New Instrumentation / Process Control Certificate Program at Local Community Colleges

As a result of a four-year, $10M grant from the U.S. Department of Labor impacting workforce education in the Northeast PA region, our three community colleges, Northampton, Lehigh Carbon and Luzerne are working together to provide an expanded set of career pathways in Advanced Manufacturing.

The community colleges have launched 17 career pathways in Advanced Manufacturing, in addition to a series of programs and services to support our students as they earn their credentials and enter or re-enter the workforce.  To date over 83 students have enrolled in these programs.

2015 Nicholas A. Stangil Memorial Scholarship Awarded to 5 Students

Congratulations to the 5 candidates who have been awarded the 2015 Nicholas A. Stangil Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded by the Lehigh Valley ISA section each spring and are in the amount of $500/each. The scholarships are awarded to students based on their interest and aptitude in the field of instrumentation and controls.

The following four students from Northampton Community College were awarded the Stangil scholarship in May 2015 : Andrew Bonellis, Joshua Jones, Joseph Lehmann, Brad Stackhouse.
